Groups

Perhaps you’ve noticed that there are at least two ways in which we grow together as followers in Christ.  The first is by taking classes (like many of the ones previously listed). These are often meaningful and intense studies that have a clear start and finish line – and they play an important part in our life with God.  But the other way we grow together is in groups. Groups come in all shapes and sizes. Your group might be the group you sit with after church or the group that gathers at your house on Friday night. Together you laugh and cry, care and share, confide and confess, challenge and support, study and grow, pray and give – all expressions of thinking, loving, serving and living like Jesus. The time, place and topic of a group may change, but the members are mostly consistent (hopefully with a few new faces here and there). These groups exist because the best things in life are meant to be shared.  And even when things are not so awesome, life is still better when lived together because a load shared is a load halved. And so we seek and we form Groups.

In the listings that follow you’ll see a sampling of groups that already exist here – Life Groups, Growth Communities, Connection Groups, and on a separate page Support Groups. You are welcome to dive into any of these groups.  There is also always the opportunity to gather and start a new group, welcoming in new people and using your gifts to serve and lead in it. For assistance in starting a new group or for getting connected into a group contact our Connections Coordinator, Lynn White, at lynnw@christmemorial.org.  Don’t miss out – be part of a group . . .because life is better when lived together!

Life Groups

Life Groups happen with smaller groups of people, about 14 or less and meet in a variety of places such as homes, coffee shops or wherever life happens.

Here is what a Life Group participant has to say about her group.

My husband and I have been a part of Christ Memorial Church for a long time. We’ve been involved in Bible study groups in the past (one group for 17 years) and a “Dine with 9” group for 14 years. In both groups we met new people, formed relationships and grew together in the word. CMC has always wanted people to be a part of a small group, but in 2017 there was renewed encouragement. We went through the normal questions, 1) Do we have time, 2) Do we want to invest ourselves, 3) Do we want to be vulnerable, oh and then by the way, what is God calling us to do! We decided to dip our feet in the water. We’ve been meeting ever since. I am so grateful we listened to God’s nudging!  We met 6 people we didn’t even know. People were open and honest with their faith journey. We’ve read, studied, shared and melded. There is no pressure and no judgment in our group. We have a whole new community of 12 people we now know at CMC and can count on to journey with us in our lives of faith! Thank you, Christ Memorial, for encouraging us to get back into a small group!

Growth Communities

Growth Communities are another sub-type of groups that are larger and more formally established.  These are groups of 15-50 people who meet weekly for Bible study, discussion, fellowship, prayer, and service projects. Each group has teacher/facilitator, a care coordinator, and a mission coordinator. And each group is a recurring adventure into community, faith, and life – thinking, loving and serving like Jesus. Most groups meet regularly through the school year and less regularly and more informally through the summer. All groups are open to new members.

Just before he left, Jesus sent his followers into the world with a revolutionary mission: to change the world by proclaiming God’s truth and demonstrating his incredible love. But the single task he gave us to accomplish remains unfinished.

In this small group Bible study, we will rediscover the critical mission of Christ in our world today and the richness of God’s calling on our lives.

Why are you here, what is your purpose, and where do you fit in the bigger story that God is writing? How should your faith affect your career, your money, your families, and your life? And why does it matter? You will find your deepest purpose only when you discover the unique role God created for you to play in his unfolding story.
