When questioned about the incident that became iconic in the fight for equality and dignity that continues to wage in our country and world, later in her life Rosa Parks was asked why she didn’t give up her seat on the bus. She replied, “I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired.” Ms. Parks was tired of the conflict. Racism had worn her out.
In this series we will observe how seeing another ethnic group as less than deserving of God’s grace wore Jonah out. It is revealed in the Book that bears the prophet’s name that Jonah didn’t see the Ninevites as deserving of God’s grace. The call for him to announce it to them was the reason for his disobedience.
During Black History Month, we will study Jonah, the Ninevites, God, and ourselves as we learn to work toward a unity in society as we already have in Jesus. God has created us as one – all in His image. Division is a human construction that emerges from insecurity and fear. Embracing God’s design means trusting Him, embracing Jesus, and living into our created unity.
